On Sunday 03 June the Claremont Main Road Masjid (CMRM) held another successful Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Newlands Sports Science Institute. The AGM was attended by close to 100 members and congregants. Haji Yusuf (Boeta Jowa) Abrahams stepped down as CMRM Chairperson after two terms in office (6 years). Khadeeja Bassier and Waheed Sookool also ended their terms of office on the Board. Dr. Salih Solomon was unanimously elected as new CMRM Chairperson. Boeta Achmat Peters was re-elected as Vice-Chaiperson for a third term, and three new
Board members were elected: Sydda Essop, Dr. Sadick Saban and Prof. Aslam Fataar. Minhaj Jeenah was also recommended to be co-opted onto the Board as youth representative. They will join the rest
of the CMRM Board: Wasiela Agherdien (Treasurer), Jaamia Galant (Secretary), Nazeem Moses and Raashied Galant.
The AGM concluded with a key note address by Hafiz Advocate Abu Bakr Mohamed. Hafiz Abu Bakr, who traveled from Durban especially for the event, gave a wide ranging and inspirational talk on the need for renewal within the house of Islam. He also pointed to the critical need to embrace the recently launched Cape Accord and its foundational text, the Amman Message. Both these documents call on Muslims to resist the threat of sectarianism and to unite against hate speech and discord and to promote intra-Muslim tolerance and co-operation.
