In 1977 the United Nations passed a resolution (resolution 32/40 B) inaugurating International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people in recognition of the injustice and gross human rights violations that were being perpetrated in Palestine. International Day of Solidarity will be commemorated on Sunday 29 November 2015.

Why do we still need an ‘International Day of Solidarity’ with Palestinians 38 years after this resolution was passed? We need it, because for the past 38 years, the Zionist State of Israel has embarked unabated on systematic campaigns of ethnic cleansing that has involved land grabs, settler expansions, home demolitions, destruction of essential infrastructure, illegal imprisonment and targeted killings of Palestinians. In addition, the long-standing restrictions on the movement of people and goods continue to undermine the living conditions of over 1.7 million Palestinians living in Gaza and other occupied territories. What Palestine needs from the world today is not just a condemnation of the injustice and gross human rights violations being perpetrated against the Palestinians, but also a delegitimization of the Zionist ideology used to justify the destructive actions of the state of Israel, just as the racist ideology of Apartheid South Africa was delegitimized. International solidarity with the Palestinians demands no less than the complete isolation of the Zionist State of Israel.

In July and August 2014, Israel was responsible for the death of 2,220 Palestinians living in Gaza, of which 1,492 were civilians.  Yet in 2015, where was the international commemoration of this massacre and the international condemnation of the brutality of the state of Israel? As long as Israel continues to act with impunity in the expansion of its occupation of Palestinian land, and as long as Israel remains a member state of the United Nations, despite repeatedly violating without sanctions, the UN’s own laws on International Human Rights, we need an International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people.

In the aftermath of the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, in which 127 civilians lost their lives, we saw the Sydney opera house and Wembley Stadium amongst other iconic buildings around the world, light up in the tri-colours of France in solidarity with the victims and survivors of those attacks. On this International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people, we call on the world again to light up their buildings in the colours of the Palestinian flag to show their solidarity with the millions of Palestinians who face daily state terror at the hands of Israel.

On this International Day of Solidarity with Palestinians, the Claremont Main Road Masjid (CMRM) once again affirms the right of Palestinians to resist the illegal occupation of their land by the Zionist State of Israel. We call on all peace-loving ctizens of the world to support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Campaign to isolate Israel economically and politically, to bring an end to the decades of state terror inflicted on the Palestinians. We call on the international community to enact its own resolutions in pursuit of justice for Palestinians by ending the impunity with which the Zionist State of Israel continues to perpetrate gross violations of human rights against the Palestinians.
